The Big Prawn Co.’s mission is to champion sustainable sourcing practices as we seek out the best shellfish from around the world for consumers to enjoy. We have an unwavering focus on sourcing sustainably, with ethics and animal welfare being fundamental to our sourcing policy.
These are the core criteria which we base our supply chains on and we will never compromise on this.
We work hard to develop the best animal welfare conditions for all species that we supply across both aquaculture and wild capture. Our guiding framework for this is the 5 Freedoms defined by the Farmed Animal Welfare Council of the UK;
To achieve this, we work with our suppliers, fishermen and prawn farmers – often in person- to ensure that the best care is taken of our species. The Big Prawn Co. have trained animal welfare specialists helping to monitor standards and work on future improvements across the global supply chain. Animal welfare is vital to all departments and the Senior Management Team takes responsibility for this.
We ensure responsible supply by buying exclusively from certified aquaculture supply chains including the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP), Organic and Global Gap.
For wild capture, we are members of the Sustainable Seafood Coalition (SSC) and abide by its sourcing code, where we primarily purchase Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified wild caught seafood (>95% of wild caught marine seafood in 2021). We also source some species from small scale suppliers and fisheries already in a FIP (Fishery Improvement Project) where we take an active part in the process of working towards full accreditation.
Some examples of our positions include;
We take pride in our achievements in this area to date, but for us it’s all about looking to the future. We actively engage at all touchpoints across the supply chain to make sure we are always working to increase knowledge of best welfare practices and promote welfare issues.
