Sustainable Seafood Week: All Hands On Deck

Today marks the end of what has been a slightly extended Sustainable Seafood Week 2022. The initiative, organised by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), runs every year with the aim of putting the topic of sustainable seafood in the spotlight by encouraging consumers to ‘choose the blue fish’ – that’s seafood with the blue MSC ecolabel – during Sustainable Seafood Week and beyond. At The Big Prawn Co, sustainable seafood is our everyday. For us, it’s not a week – it’s a long-term commitment to playing our part in improving the global industry day in, day out, and protecting the oceans for the future.

But Sustainable Seafood Week is absolutely vital to our commitment because it unites us as an industry. Only by working together can we succeed in improving sustainability through furthering education, raising awareness, and championing innovation.

Fittingly, this year’s theme has been ‘all hands on deck’ – reflecting our shared responsibility to protect the ocean. It’s a continuation of last year’s theme, and a chance to further embed the message that we all need to do our bit to ensure fish populations can reproduce in healthy numbers. That includes everyone from the fishers out on the seas doing their job, to the end consumer doing their weekly shop in the supermarket.

For us in the industry, it’s a call to action to do everything we can to improve sustainability in seafood, right across the world. And at The Big Prawn Co it reflects our own commitment to work alongside the communities we source from to improve things, together.
